Purple Fountain Grass

Rubrum Pennisetum has foliage in shades of burgundy with similar colored seedheads emerging to billow softly in the breeze. Seedheads may be up to 14” long. Rubrum Pennisetum is a very popular Ornamental Grass and commonly referred to as Purple Fountain Grass. It is native to tropical Africa, Middle East and SW Asia. Pennisetum grows in tall graceful clumps and can reach heights up to 2-4 ft. In areas where winter temperatures remain above 20 degrees (Zones 8-11) it should be considered a perennial. Pennisetum doesn’t start growing until mid to late spring or even early summer.

& Maintenance Tips

Pennisetum doesn’t start growing until mid to late spring or even early summer. Their major growth and flowering happens when the weather is hot. They usually turn shades of brown for the winter.  Pennisetum is drought resistant, prefers sandy, well-drained soil and full sun.
